about

Radical fighter for justice Kathleen Saadat has been on the front lines of political activism in Portland, Oregon, since graduating from Reed College in 1974. But Pink Martini’s bandleader Thomas Lauderdale, who became friends with Saadat during his days toying with a career in politics before the ascension of his “little orchestra” Pink Martini, knew a secret about her: she was an extraordinary singer.

Never having sung in public before, Saadat began dropping by Pink Martini Headquarters for casual sessions around Thomas’s piano, and as he realized more and more the strength of her musical gift, he hatched a plan to record an album of jazz standards featuring Saadat’s rich lead vocals.

"Love for Sale" is the result of this six-year project. Gathering members of Pink Martini to act as Saadat’s backing band, and anchoring the project from his piano, Lauderdale curated and arranged this ten-song album of favorite standards, and the result is a nostalgic and elegant album, a showcase of an undiscovered talent and a timeless tribute to the golden age of American song.

• An amateur singing talent, discovered by Pink Martini's bandleader Thomas Lauderdale, making her recording debut in her 70s!
• Saadat is a decades-long civil rights activist in Portland, Oregon, who organized the city's first gay rights march, and crafted Portland's civil rights ordinance
• Her richly elegant voice is anchored by Thomas Lauderdale, producer, arranger, and pianist, backed by a band consisting of members of Pink Martini
• Title track "Love for Sale" first appeared on Pink Martini's 2016 release "Je dis oui!", and was celebrated by critics and fans.
• The album contains ten classic selections from the American Songbook, including "Sentimental Journey", "Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye", "They Can't Take That Away from Me", and "Falling in Love Again"
